Friday, July 11 - Saturday, July 12, 2014

Friday - The weather is staying warm and humid. Walking through different streets of the neighbor, we keep seeing lovely landscaping in the front and the rear of houses. Some, like this are trees planted in rows. Somehow, they are kept flat on the sides.

We walked over to the restored windmill through the corn field. When we first arrived the corn stalks were less than knee high. Now, they are up to our shoulders.

We retraced our steps through the field and then took a little different path through the community stopping at the farm to look at the chickens. We hear these guys at the house.

Peter told me later that the farm and the buildings could've been purchased for 800,000 euros a few years ago, but now it would be much more. During the war, German officers lived there because it was the nicest and biggest place in the area.

Our walk brought us down to the main street just a few doors away from our destination: the Proef. We took the last table available outside and had our espresso and sparkling water. Next door is a liquor store - I bought a bottle of Prosecco (sp?), a Malbec, and a bottle of Stoly's vodka.

Linda sent a text message to Liesbeth inviting them over for a drink later. Liesbeth walked over to accept our offer. Noor came over while Liesbeth was still here and wanted us to watch her play games on her small game console. Liesbeth eventually had to leave to prepare dinner but Noor stayed with us for another 30 minutes playing her games and us sitting beside her watching.

We had leftovers for dinner and then later, Peter and Liesbeth came by after putting the children to bed. We talked about getting to Hamburg and Bingen among other things. Peter told me a little bit about his dad during the war. He was put on a farm around 1936 and then put in the German army when the war started. He was a courier and rode his motorcycle near the front lines delivering messages. But, like many Americans, Peter's dad didn't talk too much about his war experiences.

Saturday - We're leaving tomorrow for Nijmegen and then England on Monday, so we needed to organize our bags. We may be off line for a few days.

It was a dry day, so we clipped some vines in the yard that were getting unruly and I mowed the grass. We had lunch at the Proef. They make a very good roast beef sandwich with non-gluten bread. Linda had a salmon sandwich. She had her sparkling water and I had a Belgian beer. Nice and dark, just like I like it.

After eating we both had an espresso.

We walked around town a little and saw this Smartcar.

It was a pretty afternoon and everyone seemed to be out enjoying the sun.

Later, we took bottles and papers to the recycling bins at Albert Hein's and bought a few items. Exciting, huh?

A couple of days ago I told you about Linda finding a snail in her mint tea. Well, we found his cousin hanging around the herbs just outside the kitchen door.

Cute little thing isn't he?
